Studies


My life absolutely changed since I had entered the NSU. Thus, in this short essay I want to share my ideas about studying at school and at the university.
To start with, the hardest thing I faced with when I entered the university was to understand the system. I mean the so-called unspoken rules which everybody follow. For example, it is up to you whether you attend classes or not - nobody cares; or, for instance, if you want to know and understand any subject well, it is not enough to do all the home tasks – you need to find the necessary material on your own.
Then, actually the most surprising  thing for me was the way lecturers explain the material. At school we were just to read different student’s books together with a teacher, but here lecturers explain the material with their own words and make it much more interesting. However, there was also an unpleasant surprise - the way we get marks. In the most cases it depends on your activity during seminars-if you are not ready to ‘jump with a raising hand’ you have almost no chances to get a good mark.
Finally, the biggest difference is your own attitude to studying. From my own experience I can say that at school in most cases I studied for good marks, while now  being at the university I study for knowledge and for my own.
To sum up, I would say that this is just my personal opinion, so there could be a lot of arguable aspects that you can probably disagree with. Thus, why do not we discuss it in the comments below.

    Vera,

    I've read your post with great interest because you have managed to compare the differences b/w your experience at school and the university rather well, giving your readers an idea about your disytinct opinion about it.

    It's a pity your peers have not reflected on what you have written because it'd be quite interesting to compare your ideas with theirs. Let's ask them in class tomorrow whether they would like to do it during the lesson and if they say 'yes', I'll ask everybody to comment on your post if it is ok with you.

      rules which everybody ***follow (WF)
      read different student’s (WF) books: the plural form is necessary
      Struct: there was also an unpleasant surprise - the way we get marks > This is how you structure such sentences in Russian; in English the dash is not used in this case but a colon can be
      In **the (ART) most cases
      during seminars-if you are not ready to: I am not sure but think you have put a hypen b/w "seminars" and "if"; such punctuation is not used in English in this case. A "colon" is possible
      jump with a **raising (WF) hand > raised hand; do you remember the difference b/w the verbs "rise" and "raise"? If not quite, could you check it and share this information with your peers and me in the thread?

Cosmetic Surgery Nowadays the problem of cosmetic surgery is extremely popular and up-to-date. On the one hand, there are so many women who try to copy the features of flawless plastic dolls, like Barbie, widening their eyes, making nostrils smaller, putting collagen into their lips, adding implants, and so on. On the other hand, lots of women (and men also) protest and insist on accepting your own features. Thus, let us discuss the all the pros and cons to make up a conclusion about this controversial problem. Speaking about advantages of cosmetic surgery, the most people say that it gives them more confidence. If you are not satisfied with your lips, why do not you change it to be more self-assured? Maybe the nature did a mistake that makes you suffer? Forbidden Love

The Lovers II, 1928 by Rene Magritte It is obvious that the first thing that catches attention of a viewer is the kissing figures, placing in the foreground. Moreover, the woman and the man are kissing through the veils, which cover their faces and necks like a mask. Their clothes are rather official: the woman is wearing a red sleeveless dress, and the man is in a black suit, with a white shirt and a black tie. Speaking about the background, I can say that it is quite unremarkable, without any details or anything special, just two walls: a dark-blue on the most part of the background, and a bricked red one in the right; and a white ceiling in the top. Judging by the veils covering the lovers’ faces, they are seemed to be hiding, in addition, the room where they are staying is without any windows.
